Why I am doing the walk in the first place

So my recent blog posts have been mainly about my journey on route but I wanted to post something a little different today. I wanted to talk about what the cause of this whole walk is all about.
The charity, which you should all know by now is called TWOWEEKS, it is a small not for profit charity which started off by allowing professional medics to go and volunteer abroad for just two weeks. As medics find it difficult to commit to long durations of holiday time TWOWEEKS wanted to cater for this and not disrupt their work time.

The charity has grown rapidly over the last few years and now sends both medics and non medics out to South Africa all year long. Whe volunteering with TWOWEEKS you work closely with the kids, the teachers, schools, clinics to support as best as you can and also to allow you to really be apart of the project. TWOWEEKS sits very close to my heart as I have been out and worked on projects, seen the hard work that everyone puts in and I’ve seen the difference each TWOWEEKS volunteer makes during their time away from home. It is important to understand that when you are donating to my walk you are donating to an amazing and incredible cause and the money really does go to the people.

The amazing women behind this charity put their whole everything into giving kids and their families as much support as they can to get them on the road to living a better life. This is all done out of choice, there is no salary or big promotion for those that run or involve themselves in TWOWEEKS.
Here are a few snaps from the lovely Elly who is out in SA at the moment.

Christmas is not always a fun time for everyone.

Christmas is meant to be a time of joy, happiness, the new year is close and we should be celebrating with loved ones. This is not always the case for everyone…

When you have little food and water, your living conditions are low and your whole drive for life is almost on stop mode. The last thing you want to do is celebrate. By providing fresh clothing and bedding, putting a meal on the table for a family, reading a story to a child… All these little things help bring a tiny bit of joy and a smile to someone in need.

There are so many fantastic charities, organisations and support teams out there supporting those in need and it is vital they keep going and people keep donating to their causes. It can be a hard cold time over Christmas all over the world for many families, so think of what you have and be grateful for the life and chances you have been given.

I want the money I raise from my walk to go back into the communities that need it and deserve the help and support. We have so much in the Western world that we take for granted, just to be able to put a tasty hot meal on the table for a family or give a child a chance with their education… If you feel the same please show your support and sponsor me! Support TWOWEEKS by donating, get into that Christmas spirit.

Why am I walking from London to Scotland?!

It might be a good idea to explain why this is all taking place…

Last year, as I previously mentioned, I went out to South Africa. I didn’t want to just go do the travelling thing I wanted to give back and get involved in a project that I actually believed in. I was struggling to find an organisation or charity that didn’t charge ridiculous costs (which quite frankly I do not know where this money goes to?!) and that allowed me to explore my creative side.

I then came across TWOWEEKS. They are a small not for profit organisation based in the UK, currently supporting organisations out in South Africa – I was able to work on my photography and teach creatively to the kids

PERFECT! This was just what I was looking for!

So who are TWOWEEKS exactly?

TWOWEEKS are an organisation that enables professionals with a variety of skills to volunteer overseas for a minimum of two weeks. They aim to relieve suffering through improved healthcare, education and relief of social deprivation. They provide assistance to projects already in existence around the world, in particular South Africa where they work with 3 orphanages and assist with other community endeavours.

I feel this is a incredible charity which is completely run by a small group of volunteers and it deserves every bit of recognition and penny that I can raise!

So now you know the core meaning behind the walk, maybe you feel like donating a little 🙂
